Belly dance costumes

The world of belly dancing has changed drastically from the good ol’ days to modern times. While the standard costume use to cover much more, the western world has changed the view on belly dancing costumes forever. They have become sexier, and accentuate both the dance moves as well as the body. While the traditional caftan is still used today, mostly before and after shows. They aren’t as popular during the show anymore. Instead, many belly dancers are opting for the bedlah style costumes.

Bedlah style costumes often times include a fitted top or bra-top, usually lined with beads or coins. Combined with a matching or accenting hip-belt, lined once again with beads or coins. Along with a veil that is usually there to four yard strip of beautiful fabric. Of which is used to accentuate the movement of one’s arms during belly dancing.

However throughout the world, there will be a slight difference between the belly dancing costumes. While in Egypt most dancers wear fully beaded dresses. They are still available to purchase in the western world. However, it of course will vary upon the type of belly dancing that you choose to participate in. However, the second most common style of belly dance costume is the cabaret costume. Of which consists of a hip belt, skirt or harem pants, veils, and a bra. While these are your staples for any belly dance costume, many people choose to add in a few extra accessories.

From decorative arm coverings, head pieces, wristbands, scarves, neck-bands, face veils, jewelry, and of course shoes. Are all added to accentuate the allure that belly dancing provides. While they are all optional for the art of belly dancing, they help to achieve a level of mystery and fantasy within the dance.

Whether you are new to belly dancing, or are a seasoned dancer. There are many mistakes made with costuming. While many teachers will make sure their students know how to properly wear their costumes. Some might not, leaving you to wonder how exactly the fabric is suppose to sit. The one piece that gives dancers the most trouble, is the belt. Of which should be worn around the dancer’s hips. It is common for dancers to wear them across their waist, however it can hinder the performance of belly rolls and other moves. Remember, read any instructions that come with your costumes. While not all will offer instructions, use common sense. If you can’t move in the costume, it probably won’t work for belly dancing. Steer clear of any overly cheap costumes, as they usually have the quality of Halloween costumes and are meant for light use only. Instead, it should be an investment in quality as with any article of clothing.
